Interesting. Say your at a restaurant with not very good service or promptness. What's your feeling on not wanting to leave a good tip because of how frustrated you are with your waiter/waitress? What is acceptable when this happens?

Question: Should I "tip" fast food places? There's a Baskin Robbins that we frequent on Tuesday nights ($1/scoop night). There's usually a line out the door and the teenage employees aren't really friendly or fast. yet, there's a tip jar by the cash register. I don't like to tip, b.c I feel like the service is anything BUT extraordinary. My husband likes to tip b.c the ice cream is cheap. I think it's a scam by the teenagers to get more $$. Am I being stingy?

Ashley- when the service is sub par at a restaurant, I leave a 15% tip. if the server was outright rude or demeaning (only happened once) I privately speak to the manager and I will reduce the tip. Be cautious when reducing the tip though, because you never know what's going on with that person...as always, give the other person the benefit of the doubt. What if a close relative had just died and she's distracted? Take it on a case by case basis.

Julie- it sounds like your husband is putting the "reward in hopes of good behavior" policy into affect. Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't. If he feels badly for the teenagers and tips them because of this, it can't hurt (unless it's a financial strain of course). If the tip is in hopes of getting better service, perhaps he could say, "It looks like you are always so busy on dollar night, here's a little something that hopefully puts a smile on your face; we want you to be happy serving us ice cream because we love 1 dollar night!" This is what I would do. As always, just think about how you would want to be treated.
